Week 1: Gratitude
Scripture for the Week
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Gratitude is one of the simplest practices, yet one of the most powerful, and something we often don’t express. It doesn’t require more money, better circumstances, or a perfect life. It begins with a shift, choosing to notice what is already good.
The verse above doesn’t say "give thanks for all circumstances"; it says, "in all circumstances." That distinction matters. Life will always include challenges, disappointments, and uncertainty. Gratitude doesn’t ignore those realities; it exists alongside them.
It is a quiet decision: There is still something good here, and I will not overlook it.
A Story to Begin
There’s a story about a man who complained daily about his worn-out shoes. They were uncomfortable, old, and far from what he wanted. One day, he passed someone without shoes.
A man with no shoes.
In that moment, nothing about his situation changed, but everything about his perspective did. His shoes were no longer just a problem. Old and worn, having shoes was a blessing.
Gratitude often begins like that, not with abundance, but with awareness.
Why Gratitude Matters
What you focus on grows in your awareness. If you focus only on what is missing, life will always feel lacking. But when you begin to notice what is present, something shifts internally.
Gratitude:
· Brings peace in the middle of chaos
· Softens frustration
· Strengthens faith
· Reminds you that you are not without blessings
It grounds you in truth that even on difficult days, there is still something to be thankful for.
Daily Practice (Simple and Powerful)
Each day this week, write down:
3 things you are grateful for
They don’t have to be big or impressive:
· A quiet moment before the day begins
· A kind word from someone
· Strength to get through a hard task
· A meal, a home, a breath
Small things, consistently noticed, begin to change how you see everything.
Midweek Pause
Take a moment halfway through the week and reflect:
· Am I noticing more good in my day?
· Have I been overlooking simple blessings?
Sometimes gratitude grows not because life improves, but because awareness deepens.
A Shift in Perspective
At least once this week, when something frustrating happens, pause and ask:
“What can I still be thankful for in this moment?”
It might feel unnatural at first, but this is where gratitude becomes transformative.
· A delay → extra time to think or rest
· A challenge → an opportunity to grow and learn
· A hard conversation → clarity and truth
Gratitude doesn’t deny difficulty; it keeps difficulty from having the final word.
Remember, Reflect, and Pray
This Week I Will Remember: Gratitude does not require a perfect life; it begins when I notice God’s goodness in the life I already have.
Reflect Before You Journal: Take a quiet moment before writing and look back over your week. Name the small blessings, answered prayers, and ordinary gifts you may have overlooked.
Prayer for the Week: Lord, open my eyes to the blessings around me. Help me give thanks in every circumstance, notice Your goodness, and grow a grateful heart one day at a time. Amen.
End-of-Week – Looking Back
At the end of the week, sit quietly and ask:
· What did I notice this week that I usually overlook?
· Did gratitude change how I felt during hard moments?
· Where did I see evidence of God’s goodness in my life?
Write your answers in the Week 1 Journal. This is not about perfection; it’s about awareness.
Closing Thought
Gratitude isn’t just a feeling; it’s something you practice. Sometimes it starts by simply shifting where you stand, changing your perspective, and choosing to see things differently. Like any habit, it grows stronger the more you use it.
When you start giving thanks in all circumstances, you begin to notice that even in imperfect moments, your life is still full of reasons to be grateful.
